We are travelling around Costa Rica for a month straight after Christmas so it makes sense to buy gifts related to our travels for Christmas this year. However these gift ideas are suitable all year round, not just for Christmas!! Some of the gifts are specific to Cost Rica, however you can make them specific to whatever country the adventurous child you are buying for is travelling too!!
I wanted to buy gifts that will be educational and practical as well as fun. These gift ideas are all items that we would have needed to buy anyway for our travels so we are saving money by doubling them up as Christmas gifts! If you want to see some other Money Saving Ideas when Home Schooling click here.

Child friendly map/guide/fact books
I really like this wildlife guide as it features all the unique species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and arthropods that you are likely see when travelling around Costa Rica. This guide will be interesting for my 4 year old who does not read yet but will enjoy looking at the pictures, as well as my 7 year old who will enjoy learning how to find and identify the different animals.
If you have older children I recommend Monkeys Are Made Of Chocolate: Exotic And Unseen Costa Rica by Jack Ewing. In this chapter paperback the author writes about how animals, plants and people interact with one another in the rainforests of Costa Rica. The author lives in Costa Rica and has a passion for environmental conservation and protection. This is a great book to use as a reference if you are looking to do a travel based project with your home schooled children.
Lastly, This really cool puzzle book will keep the kids entertained on the aeroplane while they learn fun facts about Costa Rica.
If you are travelling somewhere where there will be wildlife, birds, whales, dolphins then a monocular is a must. I prefer a Monocular for younger children as lots of binoculars do not adjust small enough for kids to be able to see well through both eyepieces and it is a pain having to adjust the size every time they trade back and forth. A good monocular is simpler to use and doesn’t need all the size adjusting.
We will be visiting lots of beaches so a snorkel set is essential! I really like this mares coral junior snorkel set as it comes with fins and a choice of pink or blue.
Adventurous children need a cold drink of water to hand at all times. This is why I am recommending these fab vacuum insulated water bottles. They have double wall insulation which maintains its temperature and keeps drinks cold for up to 24 hours and hot for up to 12 hours. They also come in three different sizes, 260ml, 500ml or 750ml, perfect for any adventurer!
